The top kicker is of great importance in community card games. In case of games like Texas Hold’em, there is always a possibility that two or more players might end up clashing on the hands that they have completed during the round. In such a case the kicker is compared and the player with the top kicker is said to win the game.

It is extremely important for the kicker to be one of the cards in the players’ hands as a high card on the board is common to all the players. An Ace usually forms the top kicker in the deck, but depending on its appearance on the board, a king or queen or lower card may become the top kicker.

At times, poker rounds are decided completely on the basis of the top kicker and players may win big hands with the top kicker and top kicker only. Besides breaking ties, the top kicker is, in itself, quite a useful card in winning hands.
