Split
One of the main ways to win a round of poker is to hold the highest cards amongst all the players competing for the pot. However, there are times when two or more players hold the cards of the same level and in such a scenario, the pot cannot be awarded to one of them alone.
Each time there is a tie in the hands that players hold, the pot is divided equally amongst all the players who hold the winning hand.
To carry out the split, the dealer is required to make equal stacks of chips and placing them side-by-side to measure their heights. By measuring the height of the split, the value of the chips can be measured as well. The split is always carried out from the largest denomination to the smallest. If there are an odd number of chips that cannot be equally divided amongst the players, then lower denomination chips can be used to make up the difference.
If, after carrying out the split, some small denomination chips are left due to an unbalanced number of chips, then the last few remaining chips are either given to one player on mutual agreement or simply passed around as per a pre-decided agreement.
Pots are often split into smaller parts such as quarters or lower.
In games like high-low split poker, the pot is split between the winners in each game because the game always throws up two winners. In case of situations where the players are playing a variation or with wild cards, there is a possibility that the same player may win both the high and the low hand. In such a case, there is no need for the pot to be split further.
