There are times when a player may choose to either check or simply call a player’s bet despite having the hand to put pressure on the player by raising against her/him. In such a case, the latter player is said to have gone soft on the former player. Such soft play is not uncommon especially in case of collusions.

Checking or simply calling with a clearly stronger hand is the most common sign of soft play.
