Implied pot odds, implied odds

Implied pot odds or Implied odds are almost the same thing as pot odds however there is one slight difference in the fact that they take the future estimated bets into consideration when making the calculations. Implied odds are usually brought into the picture when a player is expected to fold in the following round if the draw does not work out in her/his favour. This way, s/he doesn’t lose any additional bets but only expects to make more money from additional bets if the draw is successful.

In this manner, a player always expects to gain additional bets whenever the draw is made, yet never lose a single additional bet if the draw doesn’t work in her/his favour. Any extra bets that the player expects to win, by these calculations, can be added to the current size of the pot and the final adjusted pot value, or the projected pot value if all draws fall in favour or not, is known as the implied pot.

For e.g. in a game of Texas Hold’em, player A is betting in the last but one round of the hand. To win a $100 pot, player A needs to bet $10 while playing against just one player. To win, player A requires one of 4 cards that are still in the deck.

The current odds for betting in such a scenario are 10.5:1, which makes just 8.7 percent. The pot currently lays at 10:1 and therefore, in the absence of any future betting, player A will lose money if s/he makes the call. However, in this situation, player A expects her/his opponent to make the call for another $10 bet, which A will win if she makes her/his draw.

Therefore, if she folds upon missing the draw, she would lose no money or any extra bets even. This is mainly due to her implied pot odds that stand at 11:1, i.e. $100 plus the $10 that the player A expects the opponent to play. Thus the call has a positive expectation or implied odds.
