High card
A card is known as a high card when it is of the highest rank amongst all others on the table, which are under consideration at a particular point of time. Usually, when looking to decide the first big blind or dealer at the start of a home game, players may often draw single cards and place them face up on the table. The high card may end up being the dealer if such a rule is being applied. In such cases, players may also use high rank as well as suit rank, to determine who has the high card.
In the event of similar hands in the case of four of a kind, trips or even two pairs, the kicker or the last remaining card that is not part of any set, is considered for breaking the tie. In this case, the highest kicker is the one that wins the player the pot and thus, the high card in such cases is determined by the kicker.
In the normal course of poker, if no player is able to form any sort of combination or winning hand, then the player with the highest card is chosen as the victor. For e.g. if A, B and C are playing a game of Texas Hold’em and none of the three are able to form any combination with the community cards, then the two cards dealt out to them determine the outcome. If A’s hand is 4-9, B’s is 10-K while C’s is 2-8, then B is declared as the winner as B has the card with the highest rank out of all the other players’ hands. The King, held by B, becomes the high card for the round.
