Flush

In general terms, a flush is simply a hand where all five cards are of the same suit. It is not important for the cards to be in any sequence by rank, for the hand to be a flush. Although having a sequence does improve a player’s chances of winning, it is mainly due to the fact that one a sequence, the flush gets converted into a straight flush.

Flushes are always described by the highest card in the hand, for e.g. a J-8-5-3-2 of Clubs is always referred to as a Jack-High Flush. The description can also include a second high card as well if the card is considered important. For e.g. a K-Q-9-5-2 hand is also called a King-Queen-high Flush.

In case two or more player have flushes, then the ranking of the cards is used to determine the difference. However, if the ranks of the cards held by each flush player is also the same, then the players have to split the pot as poker does not carry any ranking for the suits.

For e.g. if a player has a hand with J-9-7-3-2 of Clubs and another player has 9-6-5-3-2 of Spades, then the player with the highest card, i.e. Jack, wins. However, in the case that both players have a hand like K-J-7-4-3, with one player holding all spades and the other holding all hearts, the pot is always split into two. The suit of the card has no influence on the outcome of the game.
