Dry pot

In poker, a player may choose to go all in at any moment of time. In such an instance, if there are more than one opponent who are still in the game, they may choose to call or raise the pot. These opponents may call the player to match her/his bet and ensure that the bet remains level at the all-in level.

However, they may also choose to raise from that point onwards, if they believe that there is a better chance of winning more money than what the player has put in, in the all-in call. In such a case, the money that is over and above the value of the all-in call is placed in a side pot.

For e.g. player A may have gone all in with $20 in a particular hand. There are two other players who are still in the game and player B decides to raise the $20 all in bet to $40, in an attempt to win more money from the player C. In such an attempt, the $20 that B has bet over the $20 required to call A’s all-in bet, is placed in a side pot. If C has to call the hand, then s/he needs to call both the pots with $20. However, if C decides to raise B’s bet to $60, then after placing $20 in the main pot, as a call to A’s all-in bet, the remaining $40 is place in the side pot.

However, in the above scenario, where player A places a $20 all-in bet, if both B and C decide to only call A’s bet and not raise it, then the side pot that is created remains empty with nothing being added to it. In such a case, the side pot is said to be a dry pot.
