Dead blind
A Dead blind is normally paid by a player who is either returning to a game after an absence or is entering a game. In such a case, the person has to pay the live blind amount to be a part of the game, but to pay for the absence or entrance, s/he needs to enter a smaller amount known as the dead blind as well.
While the smaller blind entered by the player is a part of the pot and other players may call it if they so desire, the player her/himself may not raise the pot if all other players simply call her/his bet.
If a player has been out of a game where the stakes are $2/$4, then upon her/his return, s/he will be required to pay the regular blind of $4 as well as a small blind of $2. While others are playing with blinds of $4, they can call the $6 bet, which now becomes the norm for the pot. However, when the turn returns to the returning player, s/he cannot raise the blind anymore if all the other players, who are still a part of the game, have simply called the $6 amount.
