Continuation bet
A player with a strong hand may decide to place a bet at any time of the game. When dealt a good hand, a player may bet before the flop, when the initial bets have to be played. After the flop, if the player still continues betting on that strong hand, then it is known as a continuation bet. However, for a bet to be termed as a continuation bet, the player has to lead the bets before the flop, as well as in the round after the flops.
For e.g. Player A has been dealt a hand with a pair of Aces. He truly believes that he can win with this strong hand and therefore, raises the pot. After the other players have either folded or called, the flop is dealt. Irrespective of what comes in the flop, player A decides that he still has a strong hand and therefore, should raise again, which is exactly what he does. The second raise or bet that player A puts into the pot, is known as the continuation bet.
In a case where the player may not have a strong hand, s/he may still take the lead in betting in anticipation of a strong hand. Therefore, a continuation bet has nothing to do with the hand that a particular player may have. It only deals with the level of betting that the player carries out.
