Come bet, on the come
A come bet or betting on the come is usually applicable in poker when the person is waiting to receive a good hand. When a player starts off with a partial draw or a draw in which s/he needs a card or more to complete the hand, then a bet to call or raise the pot is termed as a come bet.
There is no guarantee that the card that the player requires, will show up and that is exactly why this move is considered one for the weaker gamblers who are looking to make quick money but are hoping for it, rather than playing smartly and patiently.
However, come bets are great when they are bluffs that turn into semi-bluffs, or are used on an otherwise exceptional draw or when played on an extremely large pot. In such cases, not only do they keep the player in contention, they even strengthen a bluff.
In a poker game, if a player has a hand that is 3-3, he may choose to play further, and bet on the come in the hope that another 3 might turn up. This, otherwise poor, betting hand can make good money if the draw on the flop, turn and river are something like 4-3-8-T-8. In such a case, the player makes good with a set of three 3s and a pair of 8s. However, it would not work if the turnout were something like 4-9-J-A-5, on the draw.
Therefore, it is generally considered poor practice to bet on the come or make a come bet.
