Buy the pot

There are many instances when none of the players on the table may have cards that are good enough to bet any amount on. In such a scenario, when everyone simply checks their turns onwards, some of the late-position players may choose to bet on their hands, after noticing that no one is choosing to bet on theirs.

This can work in two ways: either the player who bets, forces other players to abandon their hands and fold or another player who’s waiting for someone else to raise the pot, gets the impetus s/he needs to play further.

While in the latter’s case, there is a distinct possibility that the person who placed the bet initially may not have had a hand that was worthy, and may have been doing so only because no one else was. In such a case, a person who may have a better hand, and was waiting for someone to raise, may be in a stronger position.

However, the player manages to buy the pot in the first case of the scenario when upon placing the bet, he forces others, who already have poor hands, to fold and forfeit the pot completely. Therefore, the player ends up winning the pot without any competition from other players. A move that is quite effective when played well, buying the pot can be done at any stage of the round, i.e. after the flop, the turn or the river.
