Bully

In every game, there is a player who may try to use her/his might to throw the others out of sync and eventually out of the game. The bully, as s/he may be referred to, is a very common sight in poker and is usually the name given to a person who raises frequently to push other players forcefully out of the game. How this works is that by constantly raising the pot, and by large margins, the bully forces the other players on the table to either fold and give away whatever they may have put in the pot, or simply place bets larger than they normally would, making them uncomfortable and extremely prone to making mistakes.

Such a situation normally arises when the person looking to bully others has a big stack of chips. Known as the Big Stack Bully, the player may try to use her/his monetary supremacy to force others into decisions. The bully may bet large amounts of money with or without a great hand however, the fact that s/he is playing with a large bank behind them, ensures that even a loss can be absorbed easily.

Such a play cannot be matched by other players who are playing on a short or even a regular stack simply because they do not wish to take the risk of betting big money against someone who may or may not have a good hand. This simple fear of the bully’s tactics ensures that they can push other players around into folding or making bad mistakes.
