Bug
A bug in poker is a name given to a wild card of sorts. When defined as a wild card, the card in question has the ability to be any other card in the pack however, in the case of a bug, the card may have limited possibilities.
The “Joker” cards are normally added to the pack when the players are looking to include the bug into the game. In some versions of poker like draw poker and pai gow poker, the players automatically consider the joker as an ace.
Taking an example of a situation in draw poker, if a player has Q-Q-Jo-T-4 as his hand, then what the player is actually looking at is a Queen-pair with an ace as a kicker. Similarly a hand of A-A-T-5-Jo would end up as three-aces.
In other forms of poker, the bug becomes any card that the player wants it to be. This means that if the player has a hand like A-4-7-3-Jo, then he may use the bug or the Joker to create an Ace-pair.
In another variation to conventional use, the California lowball style of play sees the lowest unpaired card become the bug in a hand. To state an example, in a hand that has 4-2-6-8-Jo, the bug takes the place of the lowest card that doesn’t have a pair in the hand, i.e. an Ace. Similarly, in the case of a hand like A-2-4-5-Jo, the lowest card that doesn’t exist on the hand is 3, hence the bug becomes a three.
The bug has always been influential in determining the outcome of the hand. With there being unlimited possibilities to what can happen when a bug is in one’s hand, there is always the chance that pairs, threes and more combinations are formed out of otherwise lesser hands, making them stronger and more competitive.
