Boat
The boat is a slang term used to denote a poker hand otherwise known as a “full house”. It is one of the higher ranking hands in poker and is usually considered as a strong hand to bet on. In a boat, a player has to have a hand that has three cards of one kind as well as two cards of another.
While four-of-a-kind is rated above a boat, anyone with a flush would end up losing to the player with a boat. There are games, however, where there might be a clash in the sets of three or two cards that a player holds.
In community card games, and with wild cards, two sets of players might end up with the same combination of threes. Let’s say a player has hand with 8-4, while another has 8-2, in a hand where Jacks are jokers. After the flop, turn and river, the board holds the cards J-8-9-2-4. The first player ends up with a hand 8-8-8(J)-4-4, which is a boat. The second player also has a boat with 8-8-8(J)-2-2. Since both players have a boat along with the same set of three-cards, the winner is determined on the basis of the pair that the players have. Since the 4-pair is greater than the 2-pair, the first player wins.
The same goes the other way round as well when the pairs are common, however it is always the threes that are looked at first, making the pair relatively inconsequential to the outcome of the hand.
