Big bet

A big bet usually occurs in a fixed-limit poker game, where the larger of the two fixed bet amounts is considered the big bet. Mainly aimed at increasing the size of the pot considerably in the final rounds of the game, a big bet also increases the possibility of a bluff.

The size of the big bet is usually the double of the small bet, or the initial bet. In a multi-round poker game, big bets are used to standardize wagers, thereby encouraging players to bluff, as a safe risk ratio is maintained.

Basically big bets increase the risk ratio in the game till the hand is shown, and is often substituted for variable limit raises. Thus many players are tempted to bluff as the pot is considerably larger meaning a larger win.

Casino poker tables often employ big bets to set the limits to the amount of money a player stands to lose in each wager. In fact casino style play is the best suited for big bets. As casinos can easily advertise the low maximum wager of the big bet, more players are tempted to try their hand in the game, which coupled with the fact that players can join the table at any time, makes it doubly successful.

Some popular poker games big bets are used in include, Casino style draw poker, Omaha hold’em, Texas hold’em and Casino style seven-card stud.
