Bet

Bet is the most important action in a game of poker. It is basically the act of putting chips into the pot, thus ensuring that a player has the chance to win the pot. The bet also denotes the amount of money wagered in the play of hand.

A bet could also be the opening bet of the betting round, whereas in a fixed limit game, the bet is the standard betting amount permissible in the game.

For example, if Player A were to 2 bets up, then it means that Player A has to put in two times the betting unit to be able to enter the pot. So in a $5 limit game, Player A would have to put in $10 to be able to enter the pot.

A bet is also an action any player can undertake, particularly if there are no bets confronting him or her. In case another player has already bet, then the player either has to match the bet, or raise it if s/he wishes to enter the pot. So basically a player can only make a bet, if no other player has done so as yet.
