Ante

An ante is basically a forced bet, where all players have to put a small but equal amount of money, or even chips, in the pot, right before the deal begins. The amount is usually quite small, about half of one quarter of the minimum bet that is accepted. Not exactly a bet, an ante can also be referred to as an entry fee for every round as it is not included as a part of the player’s bet.

The basic purpose of an ante is that it discourages players from folding, as every player who folds in every round will end up losing some money each time. Most commonly used in games such as stud poker and draw poker, antes are not generally used in games allowing blind bets.

But in some games featuring blind bets antes are also allowed, mainly to break up any tight play. Also in such games any player who has not paid the blind can easily get away with a fold, without paying anything for it, but with an ante he will end up losing some money each time. Thus antes are a great way of ensuring that more players stay in the game, resulting in a larger pot and a more interactive game.

Some popular games employing antes are Seven Card Stud and Five Card Draw. Hold’em games are usually known to not include antes. Basically in games where the dealer changes in each round, generally it is left upon the dealer to decide the ante for the round. In case players leave the table or miss out a turn, then they are provided with a special button which indicates that they have an ante pending and are required to pay it on their return.

Another meaning of ante is in an ante and straddle game, where the player seated to the left of the dealer is known as the ante.
