Add-on
Add-on is an optional move where the player is allowed to purchase additional chips, but only at the end of the re-buy period, particularly in a tournament. An add-on is basically the move of buying more chips, right before a player goes bust. During tournaments only a single rebuy is allowed for all players, irrespective of their stack size.
But this is only allowed after the rebuy period is over, and only once in a game. Another feature of the add-on is that it gives up more chips per dollar invested, as compared to those in a buyin or even a rebuy.
The biggest difference between a rebuy and an add-on is that while the rebuy is not open to all, the add-on can be claimed by all players, though in rebuy tournaments, an add-on is considered as another rebuy only, which is allowed at the end of the rebuy phase.
Even though an add-on can be a boon for many players, players who are in relatively bad chip positions should be wary of paying for the add-on as this could lead to further losses. Some tournaments even use the add-on to indicate that the rebuy period is now over.
