Value bet

A value bet is basically a bet which a player is confident about, and is looking for it to be called. So when a player holds a strong hand, which he knows will win him a showdown, he is said to be making value bet. If not the showdown, the player at least expects a good draw with which he can increase his pot equity.

Another possibility with a value bet is that it can end in a draw, which once again, if there are enough callers can end on a positive note. The only problem with this is that novice players sometimes do not realize whether their bet is a value one or not. Since there is no concrete way of knowing where your bet stands, placing a value bet can be a difficult proposition for most players.

In cases where a player is uncertain about the value of his bet, checking is a good option. Also, no matter how small the value in the bet, it is recommended to cash in on it, as this will translate into long run profits. This is an important point in particular for no limit or pot limit players. Now while it is important to place value bets, doing it too often has another advantage as it may make other players more likely to call you with less powerful hands.
