Stud
Stud is a form or variation of poker where a player is given a combination of face-up and face-down cards. The variation includes a number of betting rounds and features a constant change in the sequence of betting, i.e. who bets first, making it a non-positional variation. All hole cards are dealt face down to each player.
The number of betting rounds in this form of poker also varies and depending on the variation being played, such as five-card stud or Mississippi stud – games with 4 or less betting rounds, is fun to play with any betting structure. Such low numbers of betting rounds are more suited for larger pot sizes and therefore, no-limit and pot-limit games are quite common.
Other formats, with higher numbers of betting rounds, are more commonly played with fixed limit or spread limit formats.
Seven-card stud is one of the most common variations of stud poker that is player although there are many other forms that are differentiated mainly on the number of cards that are dealt out, such as six- or five-card stud, London Lowball, high-low stud, Mexican Stud or Mississippi stud.
In other terms, cards that are dealt face up in stud poker are also known as studs and it is widely believed that it is mainly these face-up cards that give this variation of poker its name.
