Stakes refer to the amount of money that a player can buy in for, and bet, during the course of a game of poker. Games are often defined on the basis of the stakes that are involved if a player wishes to join the game. For e.g. a high stakes game is a broader definition for a game that may, depending on the casino or card room, have a minimum $100,000 buy in with a maximum $1,000,000 raise.
