Side pot

In poker, a side game often develops when a player decides to go all-in. This normally happens when there are three or more players competing for the pot and one of them decides to go all in. if the player happens to have lesser chips than the other players still in the hand, then her/his bet can be called, and raised further, by any of the other players. The amount that is bet in excess of the first player’s all-in bet, is placed in a side pot and competed over by the players other than the all-in player, i.e. every player who has contributed to the side pot by betting over the all-in bet value.

For e.g. if a player A goes all-in into a hand with $10 and player B decides to raise that bet to $18, then out of player B’s $18, $10 are placed in the main pot while a side pot is created where $8 are placed. Now, the new call has to be at $18, due to the raise by B and therefore, player C calls B’s bet by placing her/his $18 into the pot.

The same separation takes place in C’s case as well with $10 going into the main pot and $8 going into the side pot.

Therefore, when the game is concluded, and A wins the pot, then A will only get the money from the pot that s/he contributed to, i.e. the main pot. Therefore, A gets the amount in the main pot and B & C evenly split the contents of the side pot. However if either B or C wins, then the side pot is combined to the main pot and the winner takes away the entire amount.
