A shill is a gambler who normally plays as a regular player, but is on the payroll of the casino where s/he plays. The idea is for the casino to make money from more than just the rake. As a result, they employ a shill to play on a stack, paid for by the casino, and beat other gamblers. However, in most cases, a shill is not employed for negative reasons and the main reason behind the shill is to ensure that there are enough players on a table to encourage other people to join.

A prop or proposition player is also something similar, although unlike a shill, s/he is not given any money by the casino to play. A proposition player brings her/his own money to the table to play and that is the only difference that a shill has from a proposition player.
