Semi-bluff

In a game of poker, with multiple rounds of betting, a player may sometimes begin with a bluff however, the show of community cards on the board might actually turn that bluff into a strong hand. In such a case, s/he is said to have pulled off a semi-bluff.

In many cases, a player may catch an out and improve her/his chances of winning the pot without actually intending to do so. This is different from the situation where a player is drawing to a particular hand and if s/he completes it, then s/he will have strong odds in favour of her/him winning the hand. This kind of a scenario is not a semi-bluff.

For e.g. Let us assume that a player has a hand 4-2 with which s/he decides to bluff. The flop turns up A-9-7 but following the flop, the turn and river are both 4. Therefore, while the player initially started with a weak hand, s/he immediately moved into a stronger position after the turn and the river card ended up giving the player a trips.
