River
River is the name given to the final card that is drawn in a game of poker, as part of the community cards. The river card is the fifth card on the board and is usually followed by the final round of betting as well as a showdown, if the players desire. In the case of seven-card stud poker, the final card to be given out to each player is called river.
Due to its number, the card is also often called Fifth Street. The card is always dealt face up and placed on the board.
The river is extremely influential in deciding the game and at times, it can even turn the tide of the game. If a player loses at the river, despite having a stronger hand before the river, s/he is said to have drowned at the river while a player who ends up winning because of the river card, is said to ‘live by the river”.
