Raise

During a round of poker, players may decide to increase the betting amounts if they believe that they have a higher chance of winning the round. This is done to ensure that the amount in the pot, i.e. the amount of money that would be won at the end of the round would be more. Such an increase of the betting amount is known as a raise.

When a player makes a raise, it ensures that all other players, betting subsequently, need to call the raised amount to remain a part of the game. The first bets or the opening bets are also raises of a particular sort especially when they are made in the first round before there is anything in the pot besides the blinds.

According to the standard rules of poker that are applicable in almost all game rooms across the world, the minimum amount of the raise must be equal to the previous bet or raise. This means that in a $5/$10 game, if a player wishes to raise the $10 bet, then s/he must raise it by at least $10. This means that the raise the player puts in has to be a minimum of $20. This is mainly done to move the game along at a decent pace and ensure that there is no frivolous raising of the pot by miniscule amounts.

However, if a player, in the above example, has just $8 remaining in her/his stake, then s/he is allowed to make the raise with everything that s/he has. Therefore, instead of the minimum $20 raise, the player would be raising it by just $18, and going all in the process.

Fixed limit and spread limit games allow players to raise either by a fixed amount or a fixed number of times. For e.g. some casino tables may be offering a three-raise rule which basically means that in any particular round of poker, on a table, there may only be three raises in all, by all of the players involved in the game.

However, it is not uncommon to see the fixed limit or spread limit rule being put on hold when only two players are left to compete for the pot in a round. In pot limit games, players can only make raises equal or below the total amount in the pot at the time. This basically means that if the pot has $20, in a $5/$10 game, then a player can only raise the pot by $20. Once that raise is made, the pot size becomes $40 and that means that the players following up can make a raise by up to $40.
