Pot odds

Pot odds refer to the ratio of the size of the pot at any given point of time to the cost of a contemplated call. For e.g. if a pot is at $100 and a player needs to bet $10 to make a call, then the pot odds are 10:1. Pot odds are also used as a way of measuring the chances for a player to win with the round. For this, they are often used along with the probability of obtaining a future card that will help the player win the round.

This also allows the player to calculate the expected value of the call. For a player to have pot odds means that the player is in the ideal position to win the hand along with the probability of gaining the expected future card.

While pot odds are always expressed as a ratio, it is not uncommon for them to be used as a percentage. Percentage makes understanding of the situation easier and allows players to follow just a single number instead of a ratio of two. To get the percentage for the pot odds, let us assume a game where the pot size is $100 and the bet is at $10. Therefore, the pot odds are 10:1. However, to calculate the percentage, the pot size and bet amount has to be, first added and then the bet amount has to be divided by the sum of the pot size and bet amount. That means that the percentage would be 10 divided by 110 which equals 0.09 percent.

Pot odds can be used to determine the expected value. This basically means that on a drawing hand, pot odds help determine the chances of the player winning when s/he has to place a bet with that hand. The expected value of the hand is determined using the pot odds and based on the value, the player can decide whether or not s/he would bet on that hand further.

Implied pot odds are a way of determining the pot odds by taking future betting into consideration. It is usually calculated at a time when a player is expected to fold if the draw is not successful. This ensures that the player doesn’t lose any additional bets however, if the draw is successful, then s/he does win additional bets. If the draw is made, a player always expects to gain additional bets and that means that the extra bets gained can be easily added to the current size of the pot as a way of calculating the odds. This is also used when a player’s hand is behind that of other players.

Reverse implied pot odds are applicable when a player is looking like s/he will lose the maximum possible amount if s/he doesn’t have the best hand, but if s/he does indeed have the best hand, then s/he will only stand to gain the minimum. In most cases, it is the aggressive players or their actions that are subjected to reverse implied odds. This is mainly due to the fact that if they bet aggressively and other players fold, then they only stand to win a very small amount. However, if they bet aggressively and other players call her/his bet, then without the best hand, s/he gets to lose a lot of money.

Pot odds can be manipulated by players during the course of a round. This is extremely popular in the case of players who already have a made hand, and are making the bet or raise to discourage other players from chasing a drawing hand. By betting, others might not be willing to put too much faith in the expected cards turning up on the board.

Due to its many uses, pot odds are extremely important in calculating the chances of winning in a round of poker.
