In a game of Hold’em, 5 cards are placed on the board. In such a scenario, at times, a player may not get any cards that s/he would like to include in the best hand. In such a case, none of the cards held in the hand may be eventually used when determining the best hand for that player. In such a case, the 5 cards on the board are all used to determine the player’s best hand.

For e.g. if a player is dealt 2-4 as the cards in hand whereas the board turns up 6-6-7-7-9, then the player has a couple of pairs on the board along with a 9 as the kicker since neither card that the player holds are good enough to be a strong hand, nor are they higher than the 5^th card on the board. Hence, in such a scenario, the player is said to be playing from the board.

If all the players competing for the pot at the showdown are playing the board, then there will be a split pot.
