Outs
In a game of poker with a number of betting rounds, an unseen card that has not been pulled out yet, but may come, and can improve a player’s position or hand is known as an out. The number of outs that a player needs to win is an important aspect of poker strategy. For e.g. a player with a hand 4-5 and a board that has 7-6-2 is drawing to a straight, with the turn and river to go, in a game of Hold’em. In such a scenario, the player can complete the straight with either a 3 or an 8. Therefore, the player has 8 cards with which s/he can complete a straight and there s/he has 8 outs.
Two outers are hands where only 2 of the remaining cards in a deck can help complete the hand.
There are cases when people might have 15 outs or so even. For e.g. if a player has 4-5-6-7, all of the same suit, then 3 or 8 of the same suit also offer the same outs while any 3 or 8 will also be an out. Along with these cards, all cards in the same suit will also give the player a flush and therefore, the number of outs is 15.
