Open-ended straight draw, open-ended

An open-ended straight draw refers to a hand where a player is drawing to a straight and requires any one of two cards that can complete the straight by fitting into either end of the hand. In such a situation, a player holds four out of the five cards needed to complete a straight draw using a combination of cards dealt out in the hand as well as the community cards on the board.

For e.g. a player who has a hand of 3-4 with the board cards being 5-6-9-J, has an open-ended straight draw as s/he is drawing to a straight with 3-4-5-6 and a 2 or a 7 can complete the straight on either end, making it an open-ended straight draw.

This is also known as an outside straight draw as the cards that are required by the player will fit on the outside of the hand currently held by the player. The chance to draw to a straight flush draw gives a player the maximum number of outs possible. For e.g. if a player has 3-4-5-6, all of clubs, then a deuce of clubs or a 7 of clubs will complete the straight flush. However, any deuce or 7 will still complete the straight while any clubs will complete a flush. Therefore, the player actually has 15 outs that can give her/him a really strong hand.

An inside draw would be the opposite of an open-ended straight draw.
