One-chip rule
There are cases in poker where a player may make a call to a certain bet, but with a chip of higher denomination. In such cases, unless the player specifically mentions it as a raise, it is considered a call only. For e.g. if a player needs to bet $5 to make a call, but puts in a chip worth $25 and claims to make a call, then the $25 chip will only be considered as worth $5. However, if the player specifies that the $25 put in is a raise, then the pot is raised to the new value.
This sort of a situation can occur if a player has run out of chips of a lower denomination. In such a case, a higher denomination chip may be used to make the call and at the end of the round, if the player loses or folds, then s/he is entitled to receive chips that are equivalent to the value of the chip above the betting amount.
This means that if the called amount was $5 and the player put in a $25 chip to call, then upon losing or folding after that round of betting, the player will be returned $20 from the pot. Players may or may not be entitled to reach into the pot themselves, to take back the amount depending on the situation and the rules of the gaming room or tournament where they are playing.
