Limit

Limit is, as the name suggests, the maximum amount that a person can bet in a particular round of poker. There are different ways of determining the maximum betting amount and these limits are applied to the amount that the player decides to open with or raise.

In a fixed limit betting structure, the amount of money that is placed into the pot in each bet is predetermined. This basically means that during the game, a player can only choose whether s/he wants to place a bet or not. In most of these fixed limit games, there are only a fixed limit of raises that can be made during the game.

For e.g. in a game where there are 4-rounds of fixed limit betting, then the scenario may be something like this. If the bets are $2/$4 with a posted limit of bet and three raises, then during a $2 round, three players could play one round each in a round for, say $2. After the three players put their first round of betting in, the chance returns to the first better who then “caps” the betting with her/his final bet for the round.

Another form of limit in poker is a spread limit variation where the betting can be carried out within a pre-defined or specified lower and upper limit. If a game is said to be a 5-10 game, then the players can bet anywhere between $5 – 10 in each round of the game. In the case of multi-round games, this betting level just keeps rising and due to the range of the betting limit, this form of limit-based poker is called spread limit.

In a pot limit game, there is again a restriction on the betting amount and this time, the amount being bet cannot exceed the value of the pot at any given moment of time. For e.g. if the pot has $40 to begin with, after all the initial blinds and calls are made, then a player can raise the pot by a maximum of $40. If the player agrees to do so, then the value of the pot becomes $80 and any subsequent player can raise the pot by $80 now. Thus with each subsequent bet, the limit of each bet also increases with the increase in the size of the pot.

In no limit games, as the name suggests, there is no limit on the amount that one chooses to bet. There is generally a minimum amount that one has to bet to get into the game and that point forth, that is the minimum that they need to bet provided there are no raises to the betting amount.
