Lead is the name given to the position of the player where each round of betting begins. A player usually “takes” the lead or “becomes” the lead once after either raising the pot or making the last bet in a round. The player is called the lead simply because after her/his turn, the next player will have to start a new round of betting.

In case of a last bet scenario, the player may either call or raise the pot. If s/he decides to call, and is the last amongst those who have to bet in the round, then the next person bets only after a new round begins. Similarly, if the player decides to raise, then s/he becomes the first person to bet on the new pot size and therefore, has the lead on the betting.

Lead is also used as a term to indicate that a person has bet out into the pot when s/he leads into the pot.
