In the middle is a general term that does not have any technical meaning as such. The term is used often when a player decides to join in a game with multiple blinds. When joining in the middle of a game, the player may be required to pay a buy in fee that is over and above the normal buy in fee and is mainly paid for entering the game in the middle. This fee is normally equal to the blind and is put into the pot “in the middle”, i.e. out of order.

The player doesn’t have to wait for the big blind button to land on his seat to make this forced bet as this is more of a payment for joining a game in the middle rather than a normal bet.

In another usage of the term, player who is being whipsawed is also said to be in the middle.
