Hole cards are a term used popularly to describe the number of face down cards that a player has. Since they are considered to be hidden from view of the other players, they are said to be hidden or holed in and therefore, are given the name hole cards.

The hole, on the other hand, is the name given to the seat where the player sits. In normal reference, it is always mentioned with the number of the seat where the player sits in relation to the button. For e.g. a player playing in the third seat from the button is said to be playing from the 3-hole.
