Guts, guts to open
“Guts” is the term used to define a form of game in poker where the players do not wait for the opening hand to start betting. In this form of poker, the only thing required to start the betting is courage, or “guts” as it is referred to.
It is also the term used to define a game of poker where a number of players place a lot of bets to raise the value of the pot to extremely high amounts. At that point, a single player wins the pot and this form of game is known as guts. It is a separate type of card game that is quite similar to poker, but is played with only 2 or 3 cards in hand. The rankings of the hand are similar to poker and betting is relatively simpler.
Once a player decides whether s/he is “in” or “out” of the hand, they simply have a showdown with another player with the lower cards losing the showdown. After each showdown, there is a renewed round of betting and the players again have to declare whether they are “in” the hand or “out”. The process continues until all players, except one, remains in the game.
The guts game works on the same lines as poker although in the 2-card version, there are no straights or flushes.
