Going south
In a game of poker, players are supposed to keep on playing till the end, i.e. till they stand up from their seat permanently or till the player wins or loses everything. However, there are many cases where players decide to make exceptions and try and sneak away some chips from their stack, while in the middle of a game.
While this may be allowed in some informal home games, casinos and card rooms have strict rules against such moves and these are prohibited in almost all venues.
On online venues, players cannot go south with their chips and therefore, this term is only applicable to bricks and mortar venues. Also known as “Ratholing”, a violator may even face the possibility of getting banned from venues and casinos for going south.
