In the starting hand of a round of poker, is a player receives a hand where the cards have the space of one rank between the two cards, in the case of Texas Hold’em, then the hand is referred to as a gap hand. In case the gap in the ranks of the two cards is just a single rank, then the hand is known as a one-gap hand although if there are two ranks that separate the existing card ranks, then the hand is called a two-gap hand.

If a player receives a hand like 4-6, then the 5 card creates a gap between the hands. This is known as a one-gap hand while a hand like 8-J is known as a two-gap hand as there are two cards missing between them – Jack and 10.
