Forward motion
A forward motion is a literal term that defines a movement that a player makes during a game. According to the laws of poker, if a player picks some chips in her/his hands and takes her/his hand forward towards the pot, as if to make a bet, then s/he cannot return the chips to her/his stack again. Such a motion is considered as a declaration of intent to bet and is considered as binding as a verbal declaration.
Although this rule is not applicable everywhere, it is vigorously applied in many card rooms and casinos across the world.
Once the player makes the forward motion, s/he is only left with the choice of either calling or raising the pot. In such a case, the person can make a string bet, i.e. call first and then take some more chips from the stack to raise the bet.
