Positions, in poker, refer mainly to the place where the players are sitting on the table. It has less to do with their physical location and has more to do with the situation of the game. Players who act first are said to be in an early position.

As an example, consider a game with 10 players in it, A – J.

A is the player who is the first to act, having to put in the small blind and is therefore one of the early positions in the game. B is the player at the big blind position and is also considered a player in one of the early positions. Player C is the player who has to play first, after the blinds are put in and is therefore the final early position player who has to act.

Every one to come after C is said to be a middle or late position player.
