When a card, which has already been dealt into play, is discarded by a player then the card is called a discard. In draw poker, when a person asks for a specific number of cards, then the cards that s/he throws out for the replacement is known as a discard. At the end of a deal, the set of all the discards on the board is known as muck or even deadwood.
