Dirty stack
Players tend to pay a lot of emphasis and attention to the stack that another player has. The chips that one has, the denominations as well as the number of chips is sometimes a significant factor in how a player may play one’s hand. For e.g. if player A is looking to raise with a pair of 6s in hand, then the amount of the raise may depend on the number of chips that player B has. If player B has 10 chips of $5, and A is sure of winning the hand, then s/he may bet at an amount to either get the most out of B, i.e. raise to such a level that if B loses, then s/he has either nothing or very little left to continue.
Similarly, B may decide to mislead A into placing a higher or lower bet by sneaking a few $2 chips into the $5 stack, somewhere in the middle. This way, A, going by the height of the stack, makes a decision which turns out to be wrong as B had misled A about the value of the stack that s/he had.
This sort of stack, where the chips of other denominations are mixed into the middle of a stack, is called a dirty stack. A somewhat effective tool when it comes to misleading players into betting with wrong amounts, these dirty stacks are not uncommon in casinos, poker tournaments and even home games. Online venues do not allow this liberty as stacks are not measure in chips, but simply the summation of the total amount won.
