Deuce-to-seven
Deuce to seven is a method of evaluation of low hands. Also known as Kansas Low Ball, deuce to seven lowball is used in a game where the lowest hand wins the pot. Deuce to seven low is used quite often in poker although it is not as common as the Ace-to-five low.
Like in all low hand games, any form of pairs or sets of three are considered bad for a deuce-to-seven game. In deuce-to-seven low games, the comparison of cards is in the same format as the other low hand games in poker.
First the highest cards of all competing hands are compared. This is followed by the next highest and so on till the lowest cards. Aces are always considered high in deuce-to-seven, hence the name. Any straights, flushes or any other form of winning hand is always considered a poor choice for deuce-to-seven players.
An example of such a hand would be the case when, say, A, B and C are three players playing in a deuce-to-seven game of poker. If A receives a hand 8-5-4-3-2 while B receives a hand 7-5-4-3-2, then B wins simply because the highest card of A is higher than the highest card of B. In the same case, if C gets a hand A-5-4-3-2, then C would also lose as A is always taken as the highest card and not as the lowest, as in some other games of poker.
Therefore, amongst all the hands that were dealt on the table, the one with the lowest cards above an Ace, wins. The reason the game is called Deuce-to-seven and not six is because of the simple reason that between deuce and six, there are just 5 cards and if anyone were to have those five cards, it would become a straight, giving that player a high hand. Hence the additional card is added.
