Dead hand
A dead hand is a special case scenario when a player receives a hand that is not entitled to be a part of the round for one of many reasons. A player who doesn’t make the appropriate forced bets is generally forced to receive a dead hand and therefore, is barred from participating in the next round. The bet that they have put in as part of the forced bet, if any, stays in the pot and the player is not allowed to remove it under any circumstances.
A player may also have a dead hand if s/he accidently or purposely touches another player’s cards. This is not so common in tournaments although it does occur in home games and casinos where alcohol and poker go hand in hand.
In home games, if a dealer accidently deals the wrong number of cards to a particular player, then that player’s hand is said to become a dead hand, albeit due to no fault of her/his own. These, along with others, are the general reasons for a hand to be disqualified and be referred to as a dead hand.
