Counterfeit

A player is said to be counterfeited if a community card, that has been dealt to the center of the table, while not changing the value of her/his hand, is quite likely to help an opponent beat the hand. This sort of a situation is not uncommon in Omaha Hold’em whereas the Texas Hold’em style is also known to have situations where counterfeiting occurs.

Omaha Hold’em normally produces such a situation in the Hi-Lo split games when a player’s best low hand is counterfeited. An example of this would be the case of player A with a hand of A-2-9-J, player B with a hand of 9-T-K-A and player C with a hand of A-3-Q-J.

Assuming that the flop is a 6-7-8, player B becomes a strong contender for the strongest hand with a 6-7-8-9-10. However, amongst A and C, A’s 8-7-6-2-A is better than that of C with 8-7-6-3-A.

However if the turn card comes out to be a 2, then that changes the pattern. While A is still playing with 8-7-6-2-A, C has a change in fortune with 7-6-3-2-A. Therefore A has been counterfeited and while her/his position doesn’t change, there is a marked change in the position of C who was earlier behind A, but is now leading her/him.

Similarly, different situations in different forms of the game allow counterfeiting to completely turn the game around on its head.
