Community card
Community cards are those cards that are usually dealt face up at the center of the table. This is prevalent in many forms of poker including the famous types such as Texas Hold’em. The purpose of these community cards is that they are common for all the players, or the community as they are referred to, in this term.
These cards are common to all the players and along with the cards that are held in their hands, players may use these community cards to complete their sets or hands. An entire set of community cards is known as the board and depending on the type of poker being played, the board is arranged in a straight line or in another pattern.
Also depending on the type of game or variation being employed, these community cards may have a different meaning than what is placed before the players. For e.g. a particular variation may require all the players to consider the lowest card on the board as a 9 of spades, a compulsory community card for all the players. So, all players will have to include the 9 of spades in their hands, even if they have a flush.
Community cards, in any game, are not revealed together, usually. As an example, Texas Hold’em requires the dealer to reveal three of the 5 community cards first, known as the flop; then comes one card called the turn and finally, the last card or the river, is revealed. Although this rule and these terms are not common for all kinds of poker variations, community cards are an essential part of card games and that is an undeniable fact.
