A cap is a limit on the number of time the betting amount can be raised in a particular round. Along with the opening bet, there is usually a limit of 3 or 4 raises during the betting rounds. However, depending on the number of players remaining in the game, the cap level may be raised or lowered.

In many casinos, the cap level is removed the moment only two players remain in the game either when the betting round begins or at the time of a raise, which would have otherwise been the last raise within the cap limits.

Another lesser used meaning of the term cap is for a chip, token or object placed upon one’s cards to denote an involvement in the continuation of the game with the hand that the player has.
