Buy-in
Buy in is the term used to denote the minimum amount that a person needs to buy chips for, before s/he can be allowed to sit on the table to join a particular game of poker. The objective of the buy-in is to ensure that the game is not slowed down by the players buying chips after every round.
Instead, players are required to buy a minimum number of chips before entering the game. The minimum amount is decided to allow the player to play at least a few rounds of poker without having to interrupt the game again.
If the game carries a $4/$8 limit, then the buy in may be somewhere around $40. The buy in amount is generally lesser than what the player might expect to play with at any amount of time but is considerable enough to last more than a couple of rounds of sensible play.
