Bottom pair, bottom set
The bottom pair or bottom set is a term used more commonly in community card games. This situation occurs when a person matches one or two cards held in her/his hands, to the lowest card or cards kept on the board, then the pair or set formed is called the Bottom Pair or Bottom Set.
This is not an uncommon occurrence especially when a player does not get anything big out of a hand. Say a player gets 2-9 as the cards in her/his hands while on the flop, turn and river, the cards that turn up on the board are J-T-K-5-2. In such a case, the player has nothing but a low 2-pair also known as the bottom pair. However the pair would not be termed as a bottom pair if the board had a 9 instead of the 2.
Then the board would read J-T-K-5-9 and the cards in the player’s hand would be 2-9. In such a case, although the player can only form a 9-pair out of the entire deal, s/he would still not have the bottom pair as 9 is not the lowest card around.
Similarly, if the player had a 2-5 in her/his hand a the board turned out to be J-T-K-5-9 at the end of the flop, turn and river, then the player would still not have the lowest pair in the 5-pair simply because the lowest card for his combination would be the 2 held in her/his hand.
