Both ways
In poker, there are occasions when the pot has to be split between two or more players. This normally happens when a tie may occur between two players or a case of playing a variation such as the High-Low Split, where the player with the highest hand and the lowest hand split the pot.
The term “both ways” is normally applicable in the High-Low Split variation of poker wherein the game may be played either by declaration or by cards speak. In the cards speak form of the game, the winner of the High and Low hands is determined based on the evaluation of hands at the showdown at the end of the round. The highest hand wins half of the pot while the lowest wins the other half.
However, in the declaration variation of the game players need to disclose, either verbally or through markers, whether they are playing for the high hand or the low one. In such a game, a player may choose to declare that s/he wishes to go for both the high and the low hands, i.e. try and win the high and the low pot.
This kind of a situation can arise in a case where an ace-to-five low method is being employed. This way of winning the entire pot in a split pot game is known as scooping or hogging the pot.
